Coronavirus Global Awareness Project in Rwanda - SHYAKA Mike from Ecole des Sciences Byimana (ENTRY 58)

CORONAVIRUS GLOBAL AWARENESS PROJECT IN RWANDA

CORONAVIRUS DISEASE OF 2019 or the COVID-19 as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has  named it is a viral disease caused by the novel coronavirus SAR-COV-2. This disease has started in  WUHAN, China in late 2019 and has since spread worldwide including Rwanda. Coronavirus disease  has spread so first due to its mode of transmittion. Some of the symptoms of COVID-19 are fever,  tiredness, aches and pain and many more but there are severe or serious symptoms of this disease  which are difficulty in breathing and loss of speech or movement. This disease has so far killed about  a million people and 22 people from Rwanda according to the numbers given by the World Health  Organisation. This disease has no cure or vaccine yet but there are preventive measures we can take  to prevent the disease.

Firstly, clean your hands often using soap and water or use an alcohol based hand rub or sanitizer.  This is important since the soap kills the virus and the water washes the virus away from your hands  well as the hand sanitizer kills the virus in your hands. This should be done as many as times as  possible since you cannot know when and how you get this virus. In general, maintain the  cleanliness of your hands.

To go on, cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze, this  is very important since it prevents the virus from spreading from an infected person to other people  This is not enough because you might have the virus in your hands but when you do not have the  disease yet. So, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because it can enable the virus the enter a  person’s immune system. By doing that you will be able to prevent yourself as well as other from  this disease.

As a continuation, maintaining a safe distance like one meter as the government of Rwanda has  encouraged us from any one coughing or sneezing is very important because you never know it  might be COVID-19. We should not only maintain a safe distance from those ones coughing or  sneezing because the host of this virus spreads it immediately or as soon as he or she acquires this  coronavirus. This means you cannot know the person who has this virus since the symptoms of this  COVID-19 come or show after 14 days after the person gets or acquires the virus. So keeping a  distance is a very important measure we should take in the prevention of this disease.

Another thing we should do is wearing a face mask when physical distancing is most possible or  when there many chances to meet crowds of people like in markets, shops, bus stations etc.  Wearing a face mask is one of the most important and used way to prevent this virus or disease  since it prevents the droplet transmittion. This face mask does not only prevent one from spreading  the disease but also prevents one to spread the disease. Another thing that this mask does though  it’s not its main use but the face mask also prevents one from touching his or her nose and mouth  and as we have seen, this is one of the ways coronavirus gets into the immune system. Rwanda has  put some punishments to the people who do not wear this face mask so please wear it for me and  for you.

Finally, if you have a fever, cough and difficulty in breathing or even loss of speech or movement,  first, stay home and isolate yourself from others and then call the health care provider to quickly  direct you to the right healthy facility. You can call 144 a free number that the government of Rwanda has put on to help people who have this disease. By doing this, you will have protected  others from getting this disease and you will also have prevented the quick spread of this virus.  COVID-19 has killed so many people so far and this is because they do not call the health care  providers to get guidance. So please call if you fell unwell or show symptoms of coronavirus. You can  also report to the Rwanda National Police (RNP) if you know someone who shows signs and  symptoms of this disease. By doing this, you will have prevented the spreading of this disease.

Concluding, I could say masks can help prevent the spreading of this disease or virus from the person  wearing the mask to others when combined with physical distancing and hand hygiene. Also  maintenance of a safe distance from any one with the symptoms of COVID-19 is important. We  should also avoid touching our eyes, nose or mouth and also remember to call a health care provider  to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This protects you and prevents the spread of virus  and other infections. I can end by giving an advice of following the government’s rules for the  prevention of this disease. When all this is done well, we will have put an end on this COVID-19. I  stay safe, you stay, we stay.
